2018 Buick LaCrosse Release Date, Preview, Pricing

The LaCrosse has been a staple in Buick’s lineup since 2005 and it’s showing no signs of checking out anytime soon. In fact, Buick recently redesigned this midsize sedan, giving it a sharp new body, making it roomier, and dropping 300 pounds. Despite its recent updates, GM will be adding a light hybrid system and updated transmission for the 2018 model year.

With it being largely a carryover, expect the overall look, inside and out, to remain unchanged. This shouldn’t pose an issue as the LaCrosse’s new, more-European look is a breath of fresh air into the sub-luxury automaker. We also anticipate its standard features carrying over without change, meaning the new model should continue with standard 18-inch wheels, auto xenon headlights, fog lights, a rearview camera, faux-leather seating, an eight-speaker audio system, and more.

We expect the same 3.6-liter V6 with 310 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque at its disposal to power the LaCrosse. Thanks to its auto-start/stop and cylinder deactivation, the V6 manages to deliver up to 31 mpg highway. For 2018, the car will gain a new 9-speed automatic transmission.

Another key update is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder model with the automaker's eAssist system. Utilizing an electric motor and lithium-ion battery, the new version will offer a 19% improvement in fuel economy over the V6. Full specs have not yet been announced, so check back for updates.

The IIHS has yet to fully test the redesigned LaCrosse – it did not complete the small-overlap test – but it performed well in every test it did go through. It is just a “Good” rating in the small-overlap test away from a Top Safety Pick designation. With no changes anticipated in this area, we look for these ratings to carry on without change.
